Volunteers Celebrated!

Congratulations Ms. Betty!

Volunteer Fairfax, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and more than 500 community and business leaders honored the dedicated efforts of volunteers at the 2010 Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards on April 23rd. One hundred and seventy six volunteers were recognized for their hard work. Among those volunteers recognized were several long-time supporters of Celebrate Fairfax’s events, including: Youth Benchmark 100 honoree, Toora Arsala; Benchmark 500 honoree, Andrew Levy; and Lifetime Achievement award winner, Betty Powell.

Ms. Betty has been a supporter of Celebrate Fairfax, Inc. for more than 20 years.  Her relationship with Fairfax County began over forty years ago as a paid staff person with the County’s Department of Recreation.  After retiring, Betty continued by volunteering her services for the last seventeen years with the Department’s programs, and has been a well known volunteer through her work with the Fairfax County Youth Football League, the Woman’s Club of Fairfax and Celebrate Fairfax.  Fondly known as “Memaw,” Betty’s efforts include scheduling seventy-two hundred youth athletes who compete in twenty-three different teams around the region, coordinating more than fifteen hundred volunteers for the Celebrate Fairfax June festival, and raising fifteen thousand dollars in scholarships through the Woman’s Club annual fashion show.

Barry Feil, President and CEO of Celebrate Fairfax, says, “Betty’s efforts have strengthened our organization.  Her drive to help others has been an example that our next generation of volunteers can use as a guide.  Betty’s spirit, generosity of time and energy, and commitment to community are things you cannot teach someone.  Simply put, Betty is special, and we love her for that!”

Along Those Lines

After graduating from college, lead singer Benjamin Bradley realized what he had been born to do, sing. After solidifying the line up in June 2007 with lead guitarist C.J. Cummings and bass player Isaac Shields, ATL was created. The four piece from Washington, D.C. take pride on having a live show that is unforgettable as well as the work ethic needed to succeed. You will NOT find a harder working band or a more dedicated group of guys. Come to a show and see why they have developed a buzz.

Starryville

Hailing from Virginia and France, the band Starryville came together to create the type of music everyone needs, pure rock and roll, collectively influenced by retro, modern and alternative rock sounds. Do not look for us in one tiny box, category or stereotype. We continue to challenge ourselves to write thoughtful and accessible songs, packed with contagious melodies and catchy grooves; and on stage… with professional, tight and energetic live performances.

Starryville evokes a theme, a color and a flavor that is unique, combining melodic and thick guitars with simple rhythms, textural keyboards and driving bass lines. Combined, creating a sound that is different enough, but still able to attract music fans across many genres. Our songs can morph from pulse quickening electric, to quiet acoustic, bouncing into many genres along the way from modern/indie rock to alt. country and beyond.

2010 marks another evolutionary year for the band with a new CD “Humors of the Blood and Skin – Part 2″ expected this summer.  Visit their website at: www.starryville.com.

Tieweb

What do you get when you combine a drummer who played in a Phish tribute band, a lead guitarist obsessed with heady British rock and jazz chords, a bassist who loves the grove that makes you move, and a singer with influences ranging from southern to roots to alt rock?

Answer: The most eccentric band on the planet: Tieweb

Combining vast influences ranging from Herbie Hancock to The Pixies, Tieweb fuses memorable melodies with danceable grooves and soaring guitar riffs to create a unique indie-rock sound.

The Virginia based band was founded in 2004 by singer/guitarist Justin Fazzari and lead guitarist Eric Bayles. Tieweb solidified its cast with the addition of rock/jazz drummer Steve Quesenberry and bassist Chris Aylward in 2005. Tieweb released its first EP Setting the Sun in 2006. Its debut full-length album, Indier Than Thou, recorded by Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) award-winning producer Marco Delmar, was released in 2009. The combination of tightly crafted melodies and avant-garde lead guitar creates an album that you can instantly sing along with after the first listen. The mix between electric rock songs and acoustic, slightly alt-country songs reveals a dynamic sound and presents a fresh experience with every listen.

Tieweb was voted one of DC’s hottest 5 bands in the 2009 DC Metromix Battle of the Bands held at the Hard Rock Cafe.  This also included an on-air performance on WUSA*9 (CBS).  Tieweb also won the Battle of the Bands at Four Courts in Arlington and then played St. Patrick’s Day 2009.  Visit their website at: www.tiewebmusic.com.

2010 Headliners Announced!

The Celebrate Fairfax! Festival all four of the national headlining concerts for the 29th annual festival.  The festival, which will take place June 11-13, 2010 on the 25-acre grounds of the Fairfax County Government Center, will feature performances on the Bud Light Main Stage by: RUSTED ROOT, CAROLINA LIAR, KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND, JOSH THOMPSON and JIMMY WAYNE.

Friday, June 11th at 8pm RUSTED ROOT

RUSTED ROOT – Formed in Pittsburgh by singer/guitarist Michael Glabicki in the early ‘90s, RUSTED ROOT’S worldly style quickly charmed fans of roots music and world rock. After debuting in 1992 with the self released Cruel Sun, RUSTED ROOT released the 1994 platinum selling breakthrough When I Woke, which featured the hit songs “Send Me On My Way,” “Ecstasy” and “Martyr.” Not long after, the band scored on tours with Toad the Wet Sprocket, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band, HORDE Festival and, perhaps most notably, the highly coveted support role on the landmark Jimmy Page/Robert Plant reunion tour.  RUSTED ROOT will be touring in support of their latest album, Stereo Radio.

Saturday, June 12th at 3pm CAROLINA LIAR

CAROLINA LIAR – Based in Los Angeles, the rock band CAROLINA LIAR released their first major debut album in 2008, and their success story has proven to be as captivating as their music.  Influences of Duran Duran, Iggy Pop, Depeche Mode, and The Cure have produced a unique style of infectious pop music and a deeper rock discourse, often branded “new wave” or “euro centric”.  The group, headed by singer/song writer/guitarist Chad Wolf, includes an all-Swedish band with drummer Max Grahn, guitarists Jim Gandara and Rickard Goransson, bassist Erik Haager and keyboardist Johan Carlsson.   CAROLINA LIAR’s history began with the Chad Wolf’s relentless zeal, leading him to a chance meeting with famed Swedish producer, Max Martin.  Catching the attention of Atlantic Records, CAROLINA LIAR’s juxtaposition of desperation and hope have yielded popular songs such as “Show Me What I’m Looking For”, “I’m Not Over” “Beautiful World”, and “Something to Die For.”

Saturday, June 12th at 8:00pm KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND

KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND – From the mid- to late ’70s, the multi-member and racially integrated group, KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND, led by Harry Wayne “KC” Casey and Richard Finch racked up some of the era’s biggest and instantly recognizable dance hits.  The group had an impressive run of disco hits including: 1977′s “Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty),” “I’m Your Boogieman,” “Keep It Comin’ Love,” “Boogie Shoes” (the latter included on the monster-selling soundtrack to the hit John Travolta disco movie, Saturday Night Fever), 1979′s “Do You Wanna Go Party,” and 1980′s “Please Don’t Go.”  The 1990s saw an appreciation of everything ’70s swept across the U.S., which led to a renewed interest in bands from the era, prompting KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND to re-form for concert performances and release multiple collections of their countless “hits.”

Sunday, June 13th at 4:30pm JOSH THOMPSON

JOSH THOMPSON – A compelling singer, JOSH THOMPSON is an artist whose songwriting reflects both the gritty realities of blue-collar life and the beer-fueled release of the Friday-night honky-tonk. JOSH THOMPSON kicked off his career in 2009, when the songwriter released his first Top 40 country single, “Beer on the Table,” and co-authored a song for Jason Michael Carroll’s Top Ten album Growing Up Is Getting Old.  JOSH THOMPSON’S Columbia Nashville debut, Way Out Here, showcases the man who has lived the music he makes.  At its core are “Who I am” songs like: “Name In This Town,” “I’ve Always Been Me,” “You Ain’t Seen Country Yet,” “Sinner,” and “Way Out Here.”

Sunday, June 13th at 4:30pm JIMMY WAYNE

JIMMY WAYNE – JIMMY WAYNE’S remake of the Hall & Oates pop classic “Sara Smile” is now the centerpiece of an album that showcases his formidable talents as both a vocalist and a songwriter. His soulful singing permeates every note of such soaring, powerful ballads as “All the Time in the World,” “Belongs to You” and “Counting the Days.” He rocks splendidly on “There’s a Memory” and “Things I Believe.”  The new album caps what has been an extraordinary year for JIMMY WAYNE. “Do You Believe Me Now” soared to the top of the country charts, was No. 1 for three weeks, and became one of the biggest hits of 2008-2009. He toured with Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley and played Madison Square Garden. Nashville Lifestyles magazine named him one of its “Beautiful People of 2009.”

With more than 90 performances on six stages located throughout the festival site, Celebrate Fairfax! has music that will appeal to a wide variety of guests.  More than 30 of the best local and regional bands will be showcased on one of the festival’s side stages.  For a full list and schedule of Celebrate Fairfax! entertainers, please periodically visit www.celebratefairfax.com.
