Celebrate Fairfax, Inc., the 501(c)(3) non-profit producer of the award-winning Celebrate Fairfax! Festival, is disappointed to announce that the B-52s have been forced to cancel their performance for Saturday, June 8th, due to an illness principal band member Cindy Wilson. Cindy’s illness is not life threatening but her doctor has ordered her to take immediate bed rest. All of the band’s immediate upcoming performances have been cancelled.
Festival producers are in the process of selecting and securing the services of a replacement headliner for the event. Organizers will make additional announcements as information becomes available.
The Celebrate Fairfax! Festival will include performances by national headliners the Summerland Tour (featuring Everclear, Live, Filter, and Sponge) and the Spin Doctors, plus more than 100 performances on 8 festival stages. Additionally the event features wonderful children’s and family programming, the not-to-be-missed Silent Disco, more than 200 exhibits, crafters and programs, the exciting DockDogs competition, the Emerging Artist Showcase, and the Fairfax County Karaoke Championship.
Celebrate Fairfax!, Northern Virginia’s largest community-wide celebration, will be held June 7-9, 2013, at the Fairfax County Government Center. For more information, visit www.CelebrateFairfax.com or call 703-324-FAIR (3247).
The tradition of honoring the Lords and Ladies of Fairfax began in 1984 as a way to recognize the accomplishments of the outstanding citizens of Fairfax County. Each member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors selects two people from their district who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service, heroism or other special accomplishments to receive the award. Tonight, the Board of Supervisors along with honored guests enjoy a catered meal provided by Coastal Flats, a Great American Restaurant, to publicly honor the Lord and Lady of Fairfax Honorees. To date, more than 500 individuals have been named a Lord or Lady of Fairfax by their respective member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
What do you get when you have 70,000-80,000 people in a 25-acre area all using their cell phones? Poor cell service! AT&T is helping us this year by setting up an 80foot tall cell tower on the site. This means Festival goers can tweet away all weekend long about the great time their having without having to search around to find a good service zone.
Celebrate Fairfax’s Community Spirit Scholarship Program was launched last year to give back to the people of Fairfax County, with funding raised through our Friends of Celebrate Fairfax initiative. Ten $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to graduating seniors in Fairfax County Public High Schools. One award recipient was chosen from each Fairfax County Supervisory District, and the final… recipient was selected “at large” from any of the nine districts.
Recipients are recognized for their community involvement, academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities, and demonstrated leadership. The submission process was extremely competitive this year as we had over 100 applicants. However, due to their outstanding academic achievements, tremendous leadership abilities and community involvement, 10 scholarship winners were chosen, and they are as follows:
At Large: Noah Smolen – W.T Woodson
Braddock School: Kailey Leinz – Lake Braddock High
Dranesville School: Kartik Gupta – Thomas Jefferson
Hunter Mill School: Kellen Levinson – Oakton High
Lee School: Pavina Sengkhyavong – Robert E. Lee High
Mason School: Xhama Vyas – J.E.B Stuart High
Mount Vernon School: Kate Schneider – West Potomac High
Providence School: Kevin Cao – Thomas Jefferson
Springfield School: Do Yeon Park – Lake Braddock High
Sully School: Christine Quetsch – Chantilly High
Celebrate Fairfax, Inc. applauds the efforts of these students and wishes them luck on their future endeavors, as we do for all the graduating seniors this year!
