Hip-Hop Pioneer Rob Base to Fill-in For Tone Loc

June 6, 2009 by celebratefairfaxfestival

Co-headliner TONE LOC has been forced to cancel his appearance at this weekend’s event.  Through his management, Tone Loc indicated his disappointment with having to cancel the show.

Filling in for Tone Loc is hip hop pioneer ROB BASE, who will appear as part of the Old Skool All Stars with the previously announced SUGAR HILL GANG and NAUGHTY BY NATURE. The triple-billed concert will be the featured performance on Saturday evening, June 6th at 7:30 p.m.

Best known for his 1998 platinum hip-hop classic “It Takes Two,” Rob Base along with childhood friend DJ E-Z Rock rode their smash hit onto R&B radio stations as well as dance clubs around the world and provided a touchstone for the style known as hip-house.

“It Takes Two” became a street sensation upon its release in 1988.  Massive club airplay enhanced its impact considerably and the song was named Single of the Year by both the Village Voice and Spin Magazine.

All Celebrate Fairfax! Festival tickets include admission and concerts on five stages.  More than 60 performers, 250 exhibits and attractions, and 75,000 visitors are expected for the three-day, award winning Celebrate Fairfax! Festival.  The event is produced by the 501(c)3 non-profit Celebrate Fairfax, Inc.

With their combination of classic hits, and innovative new music, THE FIXX continues to excite and inspire, both recorded, and in concert

Saturday, June 6th at 7:30pmOLD SKOOL ALL-STARS

Featuring NAUGHTY BY NATURE, TONE LOC and the SUGAR HILL GANG

TONE LOC

TONE LOC soared from obscurity into pop stardom in 1989 when his hoarse voice and unmistakable delivery made the song “Wild Thing” (using a sample from Van Halen’s “Jamie’s Cryin”) a massive hit.  The song was co-written by Marvin Young, better known as Young MC, as was the second single smash, “Funky Cold Medina.” The album Loc-ed After Dark became the second rap release ever to top the pop charts

NAUGHTY BY NATURE

Grammy award winning hip hop artists, NAUGHTY BY NATURE released their self-titled debut in 1991 and produced the Top Ten hit, “O.P.P.”  Subsequent albums produced the energetic single “Hip-Hop Hooray” and the1995 hit, “Feel me Flow.”  Their success has been unparalleled with the production of follow up albums that have become Hip Hop legacy, such as: 19 Naughty3, 19 Naughty9: Nature’s Fury, IIcons, and several Best Of albums.

SUGAR HILL GANG

In 1979, SUGAR HILL GANG inaugurated the history of recorded hip-hop with their single “Rapper’s Delight” a multi-platinum seller and worldwide radio hit selling more than eight million copies.  SUGAR HILL GANG’s other multi-platinum hits included “Apache,” “Eighth Wonder,” “Living in the Fast Lane,” “Rapper’s Reprise [Jam Jam],” and “Showdown” (with the Furious Five) to name a few.  As the first rap group to release an 8-track tape and a rap video, SUGAR HILL GANG is credited with bringing hip hop to the masses and sparking a musical revolution.

Sunday, June 7th at 3:30pm – PHIL VASSAR

The Virginia-born singer, songwriter and musician took his seat as country’s leading piano man with the success of songs like “Just Another Day In Paradise” and “Six-Pack Summer.”  Hard work paid off for PHIL VASSAR, first as a songwriter.  He scored hits with Alan Jackson (“Right On The Money”), Tim McGraw (“For A Little While”), Jo Dee Messina (“Bye Bye,” “I’m Alright”) and BlackHawk (“Postmarked Birmingham”). His self-titled artist debut bowed in 2000 on Arista/Nashville, and the hits continued to pile up: “Carlene,” “Rose Bouquet,” “That’s When I Love You,” “In A Real Love” and more.  His early success led, last year, to one of the more unique hits packages to come out of Nashville in recent years.  With only three studio albums under his belt, Vassar offered up a Greatest Hits Vol. 1, which was split between the hits he’s had as an artist, as well as new recordings of the smash singles he’d written for others.

With more than 60 performances on five stages located throughout the festival site, Celebrate Fairfax! has music that will appeal to a wide variety of guests.  Below are a few of the local and regional bands that will appear on one of the festival stages.  For a full list and schedule of Celebrate Fairfax! entertainers, please periodically visit www.celebratefairfax.com.
